Top Five Potty Training Tips

Potty Training. Two words that seemed to be my child stepping stone that I had feared the most. I was always warned about how hard potty training would be. To my surprise though it actually turned out to be quite simple. Riley was fully potty trained (sleeping and all) as soon as she turned three! Now it could be that I was one of the lucky few who had that “easy child” but I still used some techniques that helped me getting through the potty training stage! Here are my top five potty training tips.

Tip one: Be consistent

If you are going to potty train you got to stick with it. Its very confusing to your child if one day they were walking around in undies and using the big kid toilet to going back to diapers and right around again. It’s a merry go round that you do not want to put them on.

Now I know as a working mom I really had to express to my daughter’s day care that I was starting potty training with her. Being away from her for forty hours a week and having the daycare NOT listen to me. And keep her in a diaper wouldn’t really assist with her training in any way. Luckily for me my daycare kept on track with it and worked with her at school so that I could transition with working with her at Home. So make sure to stress your concerns to you daycare provider to make sure they are consistent as well.

Tip Two: Be Forgiving

There are going to be accidents with potty training, You are gonna hear the occasional “uh oh” as you make another trip to go gather cleaning supplies. And I know it can get stressful especially if they are having a hard time at first but be forgiving they are trying.

Anytime Riley had an accident I would always say “Its okay you will get it next time.” Providing as much encouragement as I could! Even had her help me clean up her mess (cause and effect). With me being positive it provided a positive outcome to her potty training experience.

Tip Three: Reward success

When accidents come so does success. When Riley first went in the toilet we were both excited! Shouting “Yay!” while clapping our hands. And each time she successfully went I gave her a potty pop.

Now I know potty pop is kinda the trend right now, but if you were ever sceptic it does work! You can grab a bag of suckers at the Dollar Store and it will be a terrific investment.

Tip Four: Remind them

Riley always became invested in whatever she was doing from playing with her toys to watching Frozen that she sometimes didnt remember to go to the bathroom. Which of course caused an accident.

I stayed on top of asking her if she needed to go potty so that we could stay on top of making it to the toilet sometimes. At first she acted like it was a came and still sat on the toilet when she didn’t have to go. But circling back to tip number one I stuck with it and been consistent to the point that she would tell me when she had to go potty so that I didn’t have to be her potty reminder anymore.

Tip Five: Introducing Bedtime

Don’t go all in when you first start and have your child potty train while sleeping as well. Its will cause a lot of accidents. I did have riley going to bed in pull ups until she had full grasped going to the bathroom on her own.

With bedtime though I feel like it is a little different. There is no “training” really for it. I just switched her over to big girl panties whenever I noticed her pull ups were dry for a week straight after she woke up. Even then though I think its a good idea to invest in a mattress cover just to save your mattress and your time with cleaning when you get the occasional accident.

Keeps these five tips in mind when potty training your little one and i am sure it will make potty training a whole lot easier!
